Abstract

The efficient recuperation of heat between process streams is critical to the economic operation of Bayer process plants for the production of alumina from bauxite. Unfortunately, the fouling of heat exchanger surfaces by sodium aluminosilicate scales arising from the nature of the process liquors is a major problem. A thorough understanding of the fouling kinetics and behaviour is required in order to adequately design the shell and tube heat exchangers used in this service.
