Abstract

The most common heat exchanger design problems are rating and sizing problems. In this article, basic design methods for two-fluid direct transfer type heat exchangers are reviewed. The effects of individual resistances on the overall heat transfer coefficient, temperature distribution in direct transfer type heat exchangers (recuperators), mean temperature difference, LMTD, ε-NTU, P-NTUc and ψ-P methods are discussed and basic relations are introduced. Examples of elementary sizing and rating problems are given for a shell-and-tube type heat exchanger. Finally, pressure drop relations for single-phase flow applicable for certain type of heat exchangers are reviewed.
