Abstract
Molten alkali metal salts have considerable potential as high temperature, liquid-phase media for pyrolysis, gasification or catalytic conversion of organic chemicals. Design of a molten salt process for conversion of biomass into useful fuels is described. Process parameters and engineering problems have been studied on laboratory scale and preliminary results are presented. Potential products are hydrogen, hydrocarbon gases, liquid hydrocarbons and other fuels. A chemical and physical model of the process will enable the design and evaluation of the next stage of development and an economic comparison with other biomass conversion processes.
