Abstract
Potato cyst nematodes are a serious pest of potatoes which have been introduced into Europe and elsewhere from South America. They are a persistent problem remaining in the soil in the absence of a host crop. Damage to host plants can be considerable and is related to the initial nematode population density. Reproduction is also dependent on initial population density and when at low levels, multiplication can be very great. Rotational gaps of some 5 years or more are needed in the absence of other control measures to prevent undue yield losses. Alternative control methods such as resistant cultivars and nematicidal chemicals are described and the consequences of combining all methods in integrated control strategies to reduce rotational gaps are discussed.
