Abstract

Long-term experiments on the influence of crop rotation and cultivars resistant to Globodera rostochiensis Woll. on potato production were carried out at Balcyny Agricultural Experimental Station in northern Poland from 1973 to 1987. Potatoes were grown in a 5 year crop rotation (1/5) and the results were compared to continuous cropping of potato. At the beginning of the experiment a very low soil infestation with G.rostochiensis was found. In the fifth year of continuous cropping, the nematode density markedly increased to 200 eggs g-1 soil and caused a 76 percent decrease in tuber yields when the susceptible cv. Prosna was grown. From the 6th to the 10th year of continuous cultivation the resistant cv. Tarpan was very effective in nematode control. From the 11th to the 15th year of continuous cropping the yields of the resistant cv. Fala were 22 percent lower than in the rotation. The system of crop rotation protects high yields by effective control of potato cyst nematode, bacterial and fungal diseases.
