Abstract
In this chapter grazing intensities and patterns in the vegetation in salt marsh and inland mixed grassland communities are discussed. The questions to be answered are (i) which method(s) can be adopted when measuring grazing intensity?, (ii) which part of the herbage accumulated is utilized by the grazers?, (iii) is there any selection for forage quality and/or maximizing the energy intake rate whilst foraging (optimal foraging)?, (iv) on what scale can patterns in the vegetation develop and maintain themselves and to what extent can this process be influenced experimentally?
