Abstract

The chemical analysis of ceramic materials is notoriously difficult, especially when looking for low levels of impurity. Yet the effects of contaminates, even at low levels, can have profound effects on the performance characteristic of the ceramic. LA-ICP-MS can overcome the difficulties normally associated with the analysis of ceramics by directly vaporising the solid sample, forming an aerosol which is injected into the plasma where it is ionised. Use of the technique will be illustrated by analysis of ceria, silicon nitride and silicon carbide.
