Abstract
Since the earliest times man has introduced plants to regions outside their original area of distribution. Some species have been imported before (archaeophytes) and some after the year 1500 (neophytes), whereas the origin of several species is unknown. Exotics have been transported unintentionally with ship ballast, military transport, foreign grains, foreign fertilizers, wool and cotton, straw and hay. Plants have also been intentionally introduced as medicinal herbs, crop plants and for horticultural reasons. In view of the origins of the species introduced, a European, Oriental, Canadian-Virginian, Cape, North American Forest and Nieuw-Hollandse (Australian) period can be distinguished.
The habitat and vegetation in which neophytes occur are discussed in this paper. Exotic species especially appear to occur in plant communities strongly influenced by man. Although European plant communities generally appear to be resistant to an invasion of exotic species, the same is not true for other continents. Examples are given.
