Abstract
This monograph has investigated the way in which principled theories of syntax and modular theories of mind may participate in an incremental model of human linguistic performance. In particular, we suggest that the architecture and operation of the human sentence processor are determined by the desire to achieve maximal modularity, for reasons of efficiency, while simultaneously demanding that the behaviour of these modules maximise incremental comprehension.
