Abstract

Barley is the most widely adapted of the world’s cereal crops. It is very tolerant of a cool, short growing season and is thus grown farther north than any other major cereal, even being found above the Arctic Circle. Barley is often the only cereal that will mature in the short growing seasons that are found at high altitudes such as in Tibet and Ethiopia. It is grown in temperate climates as well as in tropical climates where it can be second cropped during the cool season. It tolerates drought, alkaline and salt conditions better than any other cereal grain. This adaptability has led to widespread acceptance of barley in many parts of the world.
