Abstract
A recurrent theme in this discussion of HLW disposal has been the need for carefully chosen repository sites. How is such careful choosing to be accomplished? In broad areas where the underlying geology seems generally suitable, how does one pick particular sites for detailed study or for actually starting repository excavation? What information is needed, and how can it be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of time and money? These are basic questions that face a geologist when called on for advice about disposal of high-level nuclear waste.
