Abstract
The main mechanisms suggested in the literature for interpreting the effect of active elements on the growth and adhesion of alumina scales are reviewed and discussed, with particular emphasis on some of the more recent contributions.
First, the various active elements will be considered on whether they can detrimentally affect alumina scales, show varying effects or improve the protective character of such scales.
Then, the discussion will be focused on some of the more important mechanisms developed during the recent years and which account for the improvement of the properties of Al2O3 scales, i.e. effect of active elements on:
-
the strengthening of the alloy-scale bonding with relation to segregation phenomena;
-
the scale morphology and microstructure;
-
the diffusion mechanisms;
-
the scale plasticity.
The discussion will be supported by results obtained on doped massive alumina.
