Abstract
The amount of work on the mechanical properties of oxides is limited, except for Al2O3. The influence of impurities on these properties has been seldomly examined in detail.
In this survey, we briefly summarise the mechanisms by which a solid oxide responds to an applied stress: motion of extended defects (cracks, twins, dislocations ...) and/or of point defects (Nabarro creep ...). By presenting typical examples, mostly for Al2O3, we illustrate the different behaviours. The rôle of impurities will be discussed for each kind of mechanism.
