Abstract
Access to the peritoneal cavity using an indwelling permanent and trouble free catheter is the key factor in the success of long term peritoneal dialysis. With the introduction of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, an increasing proportion of patients with end-stage renal disease are being managed at home and for this an easy and safe access to the peritoneal cavity is essential. Since Palmer et al. [1–2] introduced an indwelling silicone rubber peritoneal catheter in 1964, several modifications have been made to the original design directed chiefly towards improved anchoring to subcutaneous tissues and decreasing free movement inside the peritoneal cavity. The Tenckhoff version of the silicone catheter is still the most widely used catheter [3]. Catheter related complications such as catheter tip migration, dialysis solution leak, and exit site infection are frequently encounterd with the use of Tenckhoff’s catheter often related to improper placement and post placement care. Overall one year survival of the peritoneal catheter is 60–70% [4].
