Abstract

Cavernous hemangiomas of the retina and the optic disc are rare and some authors have even questionned their existence as a separate entity [11, 37]. They have been considered as localized vascular tumefactions, partly isolated from the normal retinal vascular tree [14, 16], as hamartomas part of a neurophakomatosis with probable autosomal dominant inheritance [15] or even as congenital venous malformations with a growth potential like that of von Hippel’s disease [30]. Up to now, about 80 cases have been published [1–3, 5, 7–21, 23–53]. Cavernous hemangiomas of the retina and of the optic disc are probably congenital non-progressive tumors, which may be part of an oculo-neuro-cutaneous syndrome.
