Abstract

The main steps of the triticale breeding evolution at NPBS are referred, showing its impact on the triticale utilization by the portuguese farmers.

Yield potential and test weight of the main varieties representing this evolution are presented.

New breeding strategies, consequence of the cereals price policy, are conducting to a different plant type, better adapted to a low input cropping systems. This new model of variety, based on longer growth cycle, can be decisive to the future of the triticale cultivation in Portugal.
