Abstract
It is widely believed that a solar flare is an event in which the free energy accumulated in the coronal magnetic field is catastrophically released. However, current understanding of the question of what triggers flare events is not yet theoretically unified. We investigate the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of the solar coronal magnetic field based on the Woltjer-Taylor minimum energy principle (Woltjer, 1958; Taylor, 1974) as well as using the numerical simulations, and propose the new insight that a solar flare is a transition process between bifurcated equilibrium branches.
