Inleiding
‘Ouder worden’ is niet zo moeilijk. Je moet alleen lang genoeg blijven leven. En laat dit nu precies zijn wat we met z’n allen wereldwijd doen. Maar voor iedereen tikt de biologische klok door en, ziekte buiten beschouwing gelaten, heeft ouder worden een prijs. Deze prijs heet senescentie of biologische deterioratie (met andere woorden: aftakeling) waaraan geen enkel orgaan met bijbehorende functie weet te ontsnappen. Dit wil niet zeggen dat verouderen per se aanleiding hoeft te geven tot stoornissen, beperkingen en participatierestricties, maar – zuiver door leeftijd – is dit toch heel vaak het geval. Zowel in België als Nederland is de gemiddelde levensverwachting rond de 80 jaar en senioren blijken na hun 65ste nog gemiddeld zeven tot acht jaar ‘leven zonder beperkingen’ te mogen verwachten. Maar als je dan 72 bent en gemiddeld nog een kleine tien jaar aan je conto mag toevoegen, wordt het ‘genieten van de oude dag’ toch wel wat moeilijker en impliceren beperkingen en een minder goede gezondheid een pertinent grotere zorgvraag. Een van die zorgvragen (zowel preventief als therapeutisch) is de valproblematiek op hogere leeftijd.
