Abstract
Recent reports demonstrate a reduction of bone mineral content on the distal radius in thalassemic patients over the age of 9 years [1–3]. The possibility of accurately measuring bone density at the level of the lumbar spine and femur has significantly improved the sensitivity of measurements in thalassemic patients with primary and secondary amenorrhea, using double X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), to investigate the incidence of osteopenia and its correlation with age, duration of amenorrhea, and biochemical markers of calcium metabolism.
