Lo splancnocranio deriva quasi completamente dal mesenchima dei primi tre archi branchiali costituiti da blocchi di mesoderma accoppiati e verticali, che si sviluppano latero-ventralmente nella regione della testa e del collo, adiacenti allo stomodeo e all’orofaringe primitivo.
