Silvia Gonzalez non si tira certo indietro quando si parla dell’età della prima colonizzazione delle Americhe. Stando a un articolo diffuso dalla BBC l’archeologa avrebbe definito una “bomba archeologica” le datazioni da lei ottenute, che facevano risalire a 40000 anni fa alcune impronte umane trovate in Messico, aggiungendo inoltre che il suo gruppo di ricerca era “pronto per la battaglia”. La Gonzalez, della John Moores University di Liverpool, e un gruppo di colleghi avevano stimato un’età di 40000 anni per il sito del Lago Valsequillo, vicino a Città del Messico, avvalendosi di diversi metodi di datazione: il radiocarbonio sulle conchiglie di acqua dolce, la tecnica ESR sui denti di mammut e la tecnica OSL sul quarzo associato alle impronte, che si diceva fossero rimaste impresse su uno strato di lava solidificata.
