Pathology of cholangiocellular carcinoma

  • Chapter
Primary Liver Cancer in Japan

Abstract

Cholangiocellular carcinoma (CCC) is an intrahepatic malignant tumor composed of cells resembling the biliary epithelium [1, 2]. A majority of CCC arise in the biliary lining epithelial cells, but it can also occur in the intrahepatic peribiliary glands [3] and also in Hering’s ductules [4, 5]. Carcinoma arising under pre-existing pathologic conditions or anomalies of biliary epithelial cells, such as von Meyenburg’s complexes or benign cysts, is also included in CCC [6–9].
