Seit Skinner seinen berühmten Artikel über die strategische Bedeutung der Produktion im Jahre 1969 veröffentlichte, ist die Fertigungsstrategie zu einem der wichtigsten Disziplinen des Operations Management geworden.1 Im Zeitalter hoher Wettbewerbsintensität sind produzierende Unternehmen dazu gezwungen, sich von ihren Konkurrenten abzuheben. Die erforderliche Abgrenzung,2 sei es durch eine Differenzierung z.B. aufgrund kundenindividueller Leistungserstellung oder durch eine vorteilhafte Kostenposition im Sinne Porters,3 kann durch eine strategische Ausgestaltung der Produktion die intendierte Wettbewerbsstrategie unterstützt werden. Die Generierung strategischer Potenziale kann jedoch auch aus der Produktion aufgrund besonderer Eigenschaften wie z.B. strategischer Ressourcen4 oder Kernkompetenzen5 erfolgen. Durch die Formulierung einer Fertigungsstrategie kann das strategische Potenzial der Produktion realisiert und eine höhere Wettbewerbsfähigkeit erreicht werden.6
