Mit Globalisierungsphänomenen und den technologischen Entwicklungen haben sich in den letzten Jahren neue Kommunikationsräume und Distributionswege entwickelt. Die globalen, medialen und technologischen Plattformen sowie Räume lassen sich vermehrt Eindrücke und Images von Lifestyles, regionalen Kulturen und repräsentierten Konzepten über die Grenzen hinweg kommunizieren. Vor allem die Einführung elektronischer Medien erzeugt eine immaterielle Wahrnehmungsdimension, welche physische Dimensionen verdrängt und den Leistungsträgern erlaubt, die Spielregeln und ihre Rollen zu verändern. Hier ist das Phänomen zu beobachten, dass kluge Unternehmen auf innovative und für die ursprünglichen Erfinder überraschende Weise mit „geliehenen“ medialen Symbolen und Signalen arbeiten (Appadurai 1996). Durch diese Entwicklungen können für den Tourismus global tätige Wirtschaftsakteure, welche die Identität des Standortes der Destination stark prägen, durch deren grenzüberschreitende Ausstrahlungskraft den potenziellen Zugang zu neuen Märkten, Zielgruppen und neuen Produkten und Dienstleistungen ermöglichen.
