Dieser Beitrag setzt sich zunächst auf theoretischer Ebene mit der sozialen Funktion von Vertrauen, den Voraussetzungen der Entwicklung von Vertrauen und dem Gedanken auseinander, daβ Macht als ein Mechanismus rekonstruiert werden kann, der in seiner funktionalen Wirkungsweise ähnlich strukturiert ist wie Vertrauen. Der zweite Teil basiert auf empirischen Beobachtungen und untersucht aus einer vergleichenden Perspektive (Deutschland und Groβbritannien) den Einfluβ, den Wirtschaftsverbände und Wirtschaftsrecht auf die Qualität von zwischenbetrieblichen Beziehungen haben. Die zentrale These, die in dieser Arbeit theoretisch entwickelt sowie empirisch belegt wird, besagt, daβ im Verhältnis zwischen Unternehmen mit gröβerer Wahrscheinlichkeit Vertrauen entsteht, wenn erstens die sozio-ökonomischen Rahmenstrukturen tragfähig und konsistent sind, und zweitens die interorganisationalen Austauschbeziehungen tief in ihre jeweilige institutionelle Urawelt eingebettet sind. Weiterhin wird erörtert, weshalb Macht als alternativer Mechanismus zur Koordination von sozialen Erwartungen und Handlungsweisen an Bedeutung gewinnt, wenn-umgekehrt-die institutionellen Ordnungsmuster und die Verankerungen der konkreten Beziehungen in ihnen eher schwach ausgeprägt sind. Dabei werden Vertrauen und Macht nicht als dichotomisch entgegengesetzte Konzepte konstruiert.
