Warum beteiligen sich Menschen zum Teil unentgeltlich an Open Innovation? Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse zum Thema Motivation zur Open Innovation. Bislang konzentriert sich die Forschung darauf, Anreize zu finden und zu beschreiben. Diese werden im ersten Abschnitt systematisch dargestellt. Anschließend wird erläutert, dass ein griffiges Motivationsmodell sinnvoll und nötig ist. Dadurch lässt sich besser verstehen, wie und bei wem die Anreize wirken. Schließlich wird im darauf folgenden Abschnitt das Kompensationsmodell der Motivation und Volition (Kehr 2004a) eingeführt. Daraus leiten sich im letzten Abschnitt entsprechende Gestaltungsvorschläge für Open Innovation ab.
