„Milliardengrab Einkauf – Die meisten Konzerne verschleudern bei der Beschaffung enorme Summen und merken es oft nicht einmal.“ (Müller 2004a, S.54). So lautete der Einstieg in die erste Auflage dieses Buches vor fünf Jahren. Mittlerweile hat sich einiges getan in den Einkaufsorganisationen. Transparenz und Effizienz haben sich in vielen Unternehmen verbessert, nicht zuletzt durch den Einsatz von SRM-Systemen. Der Prozess der Optimierung dauert aber weiterhin an. Die Wirtschaftskrise hat das Augenmerk noch einmal stärker in Richtung Einkauf gelenkt, wobei lange nicht alle Potenziale ausgeschöpft worden sind (vgl. Makowski/Walter 2010, S.8).
