Die Inversionsmethode beruht auf einem sehr einfachen Verfahren, eine eindimensionale Verteilung mit Hilfe von U(0,1) darzustellen. Theoretisch ist damit das Problem, eine beliebige Verteilung auf ℝ zu simulieren, gelöst. Die praktische Umsetzung scheitert jedoch bei einigen wichtigen Verteilungen daran, dass die dabei benötigte Inverse der Verteilungsfunktion nicht oder nicht effizient berechnet werden kann.
