Der Entwurf mechatronischer Produkte verlangt die Berücksichtigung des Gesamtsystems, um Iterationen zu reduzieren und Produkteigenschaften nicht nur zu verbessern, sondern auch zu optimieren, [11]. Deswegen sollten Simulationsmodelle diese unterschiedlichen Disziplinen abdecken können. Herkömmliche leistungsfähige Ansätze haben mit dieser gewünschten Multidisziplinarität Probleme und sind meist auf eine bestimmte physikalische Domäne spezialisiert. Ebenso ist der Im- und Export von Modellen oft nur mit hohem Aufwand möglich. Die Idee der Co-Simulation will dieses Dilemma durch paralleles Simulieren mehrerer Simulationswerkzeuge, die über eine Art Datenbus Simulationsdaten austauschen, lösen. Hier hat man für zwei Simulatoren gute Erfahrungen gemacht, mit steigender Anzahl an gekoppelten Simulatoren explodieren aber auch die Probleme in Bezug auf Stabilität und Geschwindigkeit [34].
