Zusammenfassung
Immer mehr Menschen leben in Städten, die Zahl der großen Städte nimmt zu. Es sind Räume verwirrender Vielfalt, geballter Aktivität und Dynamik, nationale und internationale Innovationszentren. Die bedeutendsten Zentren sind nicht nur intensiv mit ihrem weiten Umland verflochten, sondern bilden auch die Knotenpunkte in einem weltweiten Kommunikations- und Austauschnetz. Sie werden auch Weltstädte genannt, wie New York, London und Tokyo. In diesen Räumen wird viel verdient und ausgegeben. Luxus, Hochhäuser, technische und kulturelle Höchstleistungen kennzeichnen sie ebenso wie Armut und Not, Verfall, Kriminalität und Vereinsamung. Sie faszinieren und stoßen gleichzeitig ab.
