Schattierungen sind Variationen des Grauwertes im Bild, die auf unterschiedliche Orientierungen der abgebildeten Oberfläche relativ zur Lichtquelle und zum Betrachter zurückgehen. Die verschiedenen Typen richtungsabhängiger Reflexion (matt, glänzend) sind in Abschnitt 2.1 ausführlich behandelt worden; der Wichtigste ist durch die Lambertsche Formel gegeben:
