Zusammenfassung
Von einem Kulturkampf war die Rede. In einer erbitterten öffentlichen Auseinandersetzung wurde um die Seele Amerikas gerungen. Seit den 1980er Jahren hatten Kontroversen um die Rahmenlehrpläne für Schulen und die Curricula an den Universitäten, die Debatten um politisch korrektes Sprachverhalten und einen offiziellen Bilingualismus sowie die Diskussionen um Einwanderung und staatsbürgerliche Rechte, um Zugehörigkeit und Mitgliedschaft das nationale Selbstverständnis der Vereinigten Staaten erschüttert. Der Kampf wurde zwischen den Traditionalisten, den Verteidigern eines geeinten Amerikas und den Revolutionären, den Proponenten eines neuen Multikulturalismus ausgefochten. Letztere kämpften für die Anerkennung der Pluralität von Ethnien und Kulturen, weshalb erstere die politische Einheit der Nation gefährdet sahen. Wo es für die Multikulturalisten um das Ende der Vorherrschaft einer westlich, europäisch geprägten Tradition ging, ging es für die Traditionalisten um die Bewahrung der Werte und Ideale, von denen sie annahmen, daß sie den USA einen einzigartigen, exzeptionellen Rang unter den Nationen des Globus gesichert hatten. Ging es für die einen um die Behauptung minoritärer und ethnischer Identitäten, mithin um die Anerkennung multikultureller Differenzen, ging es für die anderen um Integration und Assimilation, um das Überwinden der Differenz und die Behauptung der Einheit. E pluribus unum stand gegen E pluribus plures.1
