Abstract
In this chapter we introduce the wave equation, formulate initial-boundary value problems, and prove uniqueness and existence via the spectral theorem. To get more information about the behaviour of the solutions, we have to study the spectrum of the underlying operators more carefully, which will be done in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5 we shall continue the treatment of the wave equation.
