Zusammenfassung
Am 1. Januar 2002 wurde der Euro als alleiniges Zahlungsmittel in zwölf der 15 Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Union eingeführt — einzig Dänemark, Großbritannien und Schweden behielten ihre alte Währung bei. Mit der Gründung eines gemeinsamen Währungsraums für mehr als 300 Millionen Menschen wurde eine der bedeutendsten wirtschafts- und finanzpolitischen Weichenstellungen in der europäischen Geschichte vorgenommen. Mit der Einführung des Euro verbinden sich jedoch nicht nur hochgesteckte ökonomische Erwartungen. Mit der gemeinsamen Währung werden auch Hoffnungen auf ein beschleunigtes und unwiderrufliches Zusammenwachsen der europäischen Bevölkerung und damit auf die dauerhafte Sicherung des seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zwischen den europäischen Staaten bestehenden Friedens verknüpft. Die Europäische Union erhofft sich ferner, dass die mit dem Währungswechsel vorangetriebene wirtschaftliche Integration Europas auch die Akzeptanz für Einigungsvorhaben in anderen Politikfeldern sowie des gesamten europäischen Institutionengefüges erhöht.
