Zusammenfassung
Mit den Methoden der mathematischen Statistik werden anhand von Daten aus Stichproben Eigenschaften und Zusammenhänge analysiert und beschrieben (deskriptive Statistik) sowie daraus durch Rückschlüsse in Form von Schätzungen und Tests Erkenntnisse über die Grundgesamtheit gewonnen (induktive Statistik). Die allgemeingültige theoretische Basis dieser Methoden bildet die Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung (Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie). Zusammen mit dieser bilden sie die Stochastik als Teilgebiet der Mathematik.
