Use of Soviet Constructivism Experience in Urban Planning of a Contemporary City for Digitized Society

  • Chapter

Business Ethics and Digitization

Abstract

The aim of the research is to make a portrait of the smart city describing digital trends of the present time, applying the constructivist principles of the past and taking into account opinions of various stakeholders. The dwellers of the smart city today are information society, which lives a digitalized way of life; city equips us with the latest technologies and forces to utilize them both in work and leisure. Yet, some inhabitants are not ready for this digital challenge. We suggest using an ethics-wise approach which presupposes considering opinions of all stakeholders—city dwellers, construction engineers, businessmen, government bodies, etc. We should also look back to the past and study the experience of the Soviet constructivism in architecture of the twentieth century, when creation of new spaces could satisfy all needs of industrial society and transfer this experience to urban planning of today’s smart city. Methods of research include analysis of theoretical sources on ethics, sociology, urban development, stakeholders’ positions, history of architecture; semi-structured interviews of city’s inhabitants and an expert in urban planning. The outcome of research is suggestions to design a creative space for a remote district of the smart city, which satisfies the needs of digitized society.
