Zusammenfassung
Überblickt man das in quantitativer Hinsicht überaus umfangreiche, in qualitativer Hinsicht herausragende und zudem in Teilen nachhaltig wirkende wissenschaftliche Werk von Alexander von Humboldt in seiner Gesamtheit und mit der nötigen kritischer Distanz, so stellt man fest, dass für ihn die Botanik ein wichtiges, aber nicht das zentrale Thema gewesen ist. Dies gilt selbst dann, wenn man den damals weiten Umfang der Botanik zugrunde legt und die Wissenschaft von Algen und Pilzen einschließt, sowie zusätzlich all jene Teildisziplinen berücksichtigt, die sich mit den komplexen Beziehungen der Pflanzenwelt zu ihrer unbelebten und belebten Umwelt beschäftigen und die man heute Pflanzenökologie nennt.
