Abstract

The last, rather short chapter deals with a complementary field of the application of functional materials and the use of elasto-mechanical properties, which is the target field of integrated component monitoring. It introduces methods that analyze standing waves and their alteration by damage, and those that evaluate the alteration of wave propagation by ultrasonic waves in order to detect possible, in particular concealed, damage. Above all, the latter is the subject of current international research.

„Erfahrung, nicht lesen und hören ist die Sache. Es ist nicht einerlei, ob eine Idee durch das Auge oder das Ohr in die Seele kommt. “ “Experience, not reading and listening is the thing. It does not indifferent whether an idea goes through the eye or the ear into the soul.”

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799)
