Abstract
External representations are essential for mathematical understanding. In particular, graphic representations, such as drawings or sketches, are taught as tools for solving word problems. However, children often have difficulties in using them. In this article, the differences between word problems and graphic representations are examined. Furthermore, the challenges inherent in switching between these modes of representations are discussed. Case studies are used to reconstruct how children increasingly pay attention to mathematical structures in their self-generated graphic representations and in their verbal explanations when teaching focusses on generating and reflecting graphic representations for word problems.
