Zusammenfassung
Fastenregeln waren im Mittelalter ein Zeichen religiöser Spiritualität und wurden als heilige Handlungen („Anorexia mirabilis“) angesehen [1]. Medizinische Aspekte kamen erst langsam gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts auf. Als eine der ersten medizinischen Beschreibungen gilt der Bericht des englischen Arztes Richard Morton (1637–1698), den er in seinem 1694 in englischer Sprache erschienenen Buch „Phthisiologia: Or, a Treatise of Consumptions“ niederlegte. Ein Fall handelt von einem 18-jährigen Mädchen, das ohne Anzeichen für eine andere Erkrankung in extremer Weise fastete. Morton, der die Diagnose „Nervous Atrophy, or Consumption“ stellte, beschrieb sie als „Skeleton only clad in skin“ (Haut und Knochen) und „continual poring upon books“ („dauernd über Büchern brütete“). Sie verweigerte jegliche Behandlung und starb drei Monate später. Aber erst in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde die Nahrungsverweigerung als ein rein medizinisches Problem beschrieben. Fast zeitgleich publizierten Lasègue in Frankreich und Gull in England ihre Berichte. C. Lasègue [2] prägte dabei den Begriff „Anorexia hysterica“ und W.W. Gull [3] unseren modernen Begriff „Anorexia nervosa“.
