Abstract

Today’s digital ecosystems are fast-moving and dynamic: they grow and morph as new firms join the ecosystem and as technology evolves. In order to survive, it is critical for market participants to equip themselves with the tools necessary to succeed. Far from exhaustive, this chapter attempts to introduce the reader to digital ecosystems and their relevance in the context of both business and digital transformation. In addition to a thoughtful overview, this text also hopes to present and provide direction for those who wish to explore the topic in greater depth. We explore how digital ecosystems are defined, how they have evolved over time, and how to better execute digital value propositions in today’s digital environment. Having a clearer understanding of the landscape, its evolution and the tools available provides the necessary foundation for business professionals to not only operate and navigate but to thrive and succeed in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Regardless of the methodology or combination thereof, with adaptability as the foundation, there are three important concepts to remember when operating in and deploying digital value propositions in the digital ecosystem: (1) Start with the end user; (2) Deploy a holistic approach, and (3) Iterate on a shorter feedback loop—shrinking cycle time and increasing the frequency of ideation.
