Zusammenfassung

Die Epidemiologie befasst sich mit dem Auftreten, der Verteilung, den Ursachen und Folgen von Erkrankungen in der Bevölkerung. Epilepsien zählen weltweit zu den häufigsten neurologischen Erkrankungen, es sind knapp 40 Mio. Menschen betroffen. Die Inzidenz der Epilepsie liegt in Europa über alle Alterskategorien gemittelt bei 50 pro 100.000 Personenjahre, Gipfel finden sich in den ersten Lebensmonaten und der frühen Kindheit sowie ab etwa dem 70. Lebensjahr. Bezüglich der Geschlechterverteilung zeigt die große Mehrheit der Studien eine leicht höhere Inzidenz für Männer. Die Prävalenz beträgt in Industrieländern zwischen 0,5 und 1 % der Bevölkerung; in Deutschland ist von 500.000 bis 600.000 Menschen mit Epilepsie auszugehen. Darüber hinaus wird in diesem Kapitel auf die vorhandenen epidemiologischen Kennzahlen bezüglich Risikofaktoren und Ätiologien von Epilepsien eingegangen.
