Zusammenfassung
Die Anzahl der Ersterkrankungen an Krebs lag im Jahr 2012 bei etwa 478.000, unter den Männern bei etwa 252.100, unter den Frauen bei etwa 225.900. Von diesen waren über 90.000 80 Jahre und älter (Robert Koch-Institut 2015, Krebs in Deutschland 2011/2012. Beiträge zur Gesundheitsberichterstattung des Bundes. Berlin), das durchschnittliche Neuerkrankungsalter lag unter den Frauen bei 69 Jahren, unter den Männern bei 70 Jahren. Statistisch betrachtet erkranken 51 % der Männer und 43 % der Frauen im Laufe ihres Lebens an Krebs. Vor dem Hintergrund der epidemiologischen Daten ist es bemerkenswert, dass sich die psychoonkologische Forschung lange vor allem mit jüngeren Patienten beschäftigt hat. Sowohl aus der Erkrankung als auch aus dem Verlauf des Alternsprozesses ergeben sich im Einzelfall sehr unterschiedliche Aufgaben und Anforderungen für die Betroffenen. Aus (psycho-)gerontologischer Perspektive nimmt im Alter vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Verluste in körperlichen, psychisch-geistigen, sozialen und zeitlichen Ressourcen (Brandtstädter 2007a, Das flexible Selbst. Selbstentwicklung zwischen Zielbindung und Ablösung. Spektrum/Elsevier, Heidelberg) sowie erhöhter körperlicher, kognitiver, sozialer und emotionaler Verletzlichkeit (Kruse 2017a, Lebensphase hohes Alter. Verletzlichkeit und Reife. Springer, Heidelberg) die Beschäftigung des Menschen mit der Begrenztheit des eigenen Lebens zu.
