Zusammenfassung
Große Bereiche der Erdoberfläche einschließlich des Meeresbodens werden von Sedimenten bedeckt. Diese Schichten aus Lockermaterial sind auf unterschiedliche Weise entstanden, die meisten aus der Verwitterung der Kontinente. Einige sind Rückstände von Organismen, die Gehäuse aus mineralischer Substanz abgeschieden haben. Andere bestehen aus anorganischen Kristallen, die ausgefällt wurden, als die in Ozeanen und Binnenseen gelösten chemischen Substanzen miteinander reagierten und sich neue Minerale bildeten.
