Zusammenfassung
Der knöcherne Schädel ist ein starres Behältnis mit einem Fassungsvermögen von ca. 1500–1800 ml. Er ist gefüllt mit etwa 1200–1300 ml Gehirngewebe, etwa −200 ml Liquor, etwa 200 ml Blut und ca. 20–50 ml anderer Gewebe, z. B. Hirnhäute. Wenn sich innerhalb des geschlossenen, starren Behältnisses ein zusätzliches Kompartiment entwickelt, wird zunächst der Liquor ausgepreßt, weil er mit dem Rükkenmarkraum in Verbindung steht. Danach wird das Blutvolumen in der Umgebung des neuen Kompartiments reduziert, aber insgesamt ergibt dies nicht viel Kompensationsmöglichkeit und geht mit einer Minderdurchblutung des umgebenden Gewebes einher. Als nächstes wird Hirngewebe verdrängt und gegen die starren Umgebungsstrukturen gepreßt.
