Abstract
This book has a rather strange and certainly a very brief history. During January, 1982, Tore Timell wrote me a letter asking if I would write a volume on dicotyledonous wood anatomy for his new series. My answer was no. First, I am not really that interested in wood anatomy for its own sake; second, I thought of Trees,Structure and Function, which should be revised. Tore answered immediately giving me free choice of title and time limit. This set me thinking and I realized that what I really wanted to write about was Xylem Structure and the Ascent of Sap (this is the final title; I started with the choice of about ten!)
