Wahrscheinlich hat es damals in St. Petersburg geschneit, als Pawlow sich auf seine Reise nach Stockholm vorbereitete; man schrieb das Jahr 1904, und er sollte den Nobelpreis entgegennehmen. Der russische Physiologe hatte eine Methode entwickelt, mit der man die Funktion der an der Verdauung beteiligten Drüsen bei Tieren untersuchen konnte. Mit Hilfe von Fisteln, die entweder direkt in den Speicheldrüsen oder in der Magengegend eingepflanzt waren, konnten die Speichelsekretion und andere am Verdauungsprozeß beteiligte Sekretionsvorgänge studiert werden.
