Zusammenfassung
„War ich überrascht, als mich meine Klassenkameraden auf der James Monroe High School für den Titel Jimmie Monroe auswählten! Dies bedeutete, daß ich die beste Persönlichkeit in der ganzen Schule hatte..., das heißt, die beste unter den älteren Jungen (Janie Monroe war das weibliche Gegenstück). Es war der erste Wettbewerb, den ich je gewonnen hatte, und ich hatte dafür nicht einmal etwas zu tun brauchen — keine Boxkämpfe, keine Tests — ich hatte lediglich ich selbst zu sein. Das aber war für mich denkbar einfach, denn immer, wenn ich versucht hatte, jemand anders zu sein, war das, was dabei herauskam, doch immer nur ich selbst.“
