Abstract
Multiple-appendaged bacteria were first reported in nature when samples from soils (Nikitin, Vasiljeva, and Lokmacheva, 1966) and aquatic habitats (Nikitin and Kuznetsov, 1967; Staley, 1968) were examined with the electron microscope. Isolates of Prosthecomicrobium and Ancalomicrobium have been obtained primarily from freshwater environments (Staley, 1968; Staley and Mandel, 1973; Stanley and Staley, 1977), although some strains of Prosthecomicrobium have been isolated from soil (Vasiljeva et al., 1974) as well as from marine and other saline environments (J. Bauld and J. T. Staley, in preparation).
