Abstract
Our object in this chapter is to discover groups which are residually finite: in particular we shall find that free groups and free products of residually finite groups are residually finite and that several significant types of soluble groups share this property. It soon emerges that groups of many disparate kinds are residually finite, so that the residually finite groups form a rather complex class. For a further account of the present state of the theory and for an estimate of its significance for other branches of mathematics the reader may consult the survey paper of Magnus [3].
